Felsted School hosted its sixth Model United Nations conference on 1st – 2nd March.  Pupils, some from as far afield as Morocco and Germany, made their way to Felsted to debate the global recognition of the severity of AIDS and topics centred around issues surrounding sexual health and disease, which allowed debate on a huge array of controversial issues, such as prostitution, contraception and many more.

On the opening day of the conference, the delegates were addressed by Dr Nick Banatvala, an Old Felstedian. Dr Banatvala is currently Senior Adviser to the Assistant Director General, Non Communicable Diseases and Mental Health at the World Health Organization in Geneva and was therefore in a position to provide real insight into the challenges facing the UN with regard to global health. Felsted also welcomed Emma Cole from Positive Voice, Emma has been HIV positive for over 24 years now and spoke about her experiences of living with the disease. It was a privilege to have both speakers at Felsted and to see pupils debating complex international issues eruditely and with passion on behalf of the countries they were representing.

All 240 students from the 18 schools represented, played a full part in the conference, and were totally engrossed in the array of topics being debated.

The Felsted Sixth Form students once again led the way in preparations for the conference, both in chairing and providing administration support during the conference. In particular, Sebi Anderson proved an excellent Secretary General.

Rebecca Lagden, the MUN coordinator at Felsted, commented;“As the conference coincided with the UN's Zero Discrimination Day, delegates were encouraged to display tolerance and respect in their interactions; representing various countries and cultures at MUN helps bring home the reality that we don't share the same beliefs and ideas globally; it teaches the students question ideas whilst respecting the individuals."
