Seven Felsted Sixth Formers attended the annual Model United Nations Conference in Geneva, Switzerland recently. Held in the UN Geneva building it was a real honour for the students to debate in the same chambers as the fully fledged delegates.

Pupils were particularly inspired by Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish, MD, MPH, Founder and President of the Daughters for Life Foundation, who gave a poignant speech about how his experiences as a Doctor and of war changed him, particularly the death of his three daughters. This tragedy led to the development of the Daughters for Life Foundation,
whose purpose is to support girls from war torn regions financing their schooling and further education.

The talk was especially fascinating for students Genevieve Guest and Shona Glover, who had the good fortune to represent Dr Abuelaish’s home State of Palestine. The Doctor was so impressed by the girls’ level of debate for his country that he came to shake their hands and commend them on their efforts.

Resolutions included the containment of Ebola and the continuing humanitarian crisis in Syria. Iceland delegates Abe Reeve and Antony Hickling, gave an interesting speech on their opinions of the resolution and how the Ebola virus might be managed.

MUN Coordinator Rebecca Lagden comments, “The trip offers the students a unique experience to develop their debating skills and understanding of international issues in the UN chambers themselves; it's hard for the students not to be over-awed by the venue and mingling amongst actual UN delegates.”
