Dear Parents,

As you have probably seen, tomorrow's weather forecast means that we are having to plan for disruption due to snow from about 6.00 pm onwards.  With this in mind, please note the following changes to our usual school routine:

THURSDAY 12 JANUARY:
NORMAL ROUTINE UNTIL...
16:30: END OF THE SCHOOL DAY - Day Pupils may go home and the School Minibus Transport will depart from Senior School
16:45: PREP IN HOUSES (including day houses, for all those remaining in school)
18:00: SUPPER AS USUAL

Please note that day pupils are welcome to stay in school on Thursday evening if the expected snow is going to make pick-up difficult - please let their HM know as soon as possible so that accommodation arrangements can be made in one of the boarding houses.

FRIDAY 13 JANUARY:
At this stage we are hoping to be able to follow the normal Friday routine (starting with Chapel as usual at 8:30 am) but would only expect parents and pupils to make the journey into school if and when it is safe for them to do so.

If in doubt, please do contact your son or daughter's HM directly inthe normal manner.

Kind regards,

George Masters

New two year agreement sees Felsted School partner with Mavericks Netball to support school’s netball programme and provide a superior netball pathway for their talented pupils.
Community outreach paramount to both Mavericks and Felsted.

Felsted School is delighted to welcome Super League Club, Mavericks Netball to its family of partners, as an official Partner Institution in a new two year agreement.  This deal will see Mavericks work with Felsted to develop their overall netball programme and extend Mavericks outreach into Felsted’s local community.

We are thrilled to formalise our partnership with a Super League Netball Club such as Mavericks as it means we now have strong pathways for our pupils across all our major sports (Saracens Rugby, Hornets Hockey and Essex Cricket). It gives our pupils great exposure to top coaches, such as Lindsay Keable, alongside access to tournaments and workshops.

Lucy Barrett, Head of Netball

I am delighted that we now have an official relationship in place with Felsted School.  We pride ourselves on our commitment to player pathways all the way from primary school children through to our Super League squad so ties like this to key schools in the area are vitally important.  The link with Felsted is even more exciting for us given one of most senior players, Lindsay Keable is a member of staff at the school.  We look forward to working more closely with Felsted over this two year period and beyond.

Gloria Keech, Franchise Director, Hertfordshire Mavericks

I am really excited to be building links between schools and clubs as I am doing what I love - mixing coaching and playing. It is really good to see evidence of these pathways with two Year 12 pupils already playing for super league clubs.

Lindsay Keable

We are so lucky to have the opportunity to be coached by a super league player such as Lindsay.
She has so many invaluable tips and supports us in our weekly training sessions and tournaments.

Felsted School Business Students, Matthew Stratton, Oliver Tomlinson-Roe and Cullen Lavery have been named global finalists of the DECA Idea Challenge, a premier event of Global Entrepreneurship Week which challenged students to reinvent plastic water bottles into an original creation.
The Felsted boys built a rain catcher with an attached bird feeder out of plastic bottles, intended to attract wildlife to a garden and to water hanging baskets for the elderly or less able. All of this using rain water, providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly product.

After impressing judges by a video pitch demonstrating their design, the boys are the only UK finalist in their age group. Felsted is now one of only 13 schools entered into the global final out of over 2000 initial entries.

The Felsted Business Students commented; “It was a huge surprise to be shortlisted as global finalists. We are very proud of our idea and thrilled that it got selected out of so many.”

Felsted offers both Economics and Business Studies at A Level and as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma, with many going on to study Business at University and beyond.

Felsted School’s Romeo and Juliet

Felsted School was transported to Fair Verona as young Felsted thespians treated family, friends and the local community to a traditional production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The play was double cast and performed ‘in the round’ to a packed audience over four consecutive nights. In order to prepare them for the fight scenes, the young thespians were lucky enough to receive training from professional fight director, Craig Hamblyn.

The students had to overcome many challenges in the weeks leading up to the opening night, including the complex dialogue, the six possible entrances and exits and the different combinations of cast members. However, the enthusiastic applause and the huge amount of praise following each show was a great reward for all their hard work.

The transformation of the School Hall into Shakespeare's Verona was worth the visit in itself, while the quality of the performances was really exceptional.

Mr Chris Townsend, Headmaster

I am delighted with how the show turned out and so proud of the students for all their hard work.

Mrs Melanie Donaldson, Felsted's Director of Performing Arts.

I hope that, having been struck yesterday by Doris and her storm, you have not suffered too badly.  We endured wind, rain, a few trees down, the odd tile off a roof, sports fixtures cancelled, and even visiting cancelled!  Of course, some suffered more, losing power, and up in Derby one woman was killed by a falling tree.  What struck me with the storm, and other weather events (such as the bombogenesis floods in Los Angeles, earthquake in Haiti, or the impact of tsunami, heatwave, rising sea levels, and the like), is how close society and civilisation is in some parts of the world to the edge.  Here, when power goes off, or water stops coming out of the taps, we can start to perceive this rapid descent, as we can no longer use a washing machine, boil a kettle, have a shower, or flush a toilet.

Of course, in this part of the world there is normally a rapid solution, even if it feels uncomfortable for a while.  In some parts of the world, solutions are much harder to find, and the risks are much greater.  Extreme weather events seem to become more common, and more damaging, and this is one good reason why the Round Square IDEALS include consideration of our Environment.  The Felsted Round Square committee has taken up the 50th anniversary challenge of King Constantine, the patron of the Round Square, and will be driving improvements in recycling around the site, as a small contribution to this - as Dame Baroness Cox said, we can't do everything, but mustn't do nothing.  We host the European Conference in January 2018, a great opportunity for our pupils to participate in a major event at Felsted, and for the whole community to engage with the values of the Round Square.

Meanwhile, this weekend, as well as many sports fixtures, lectures, house feast and other activities, we are very proud to host the Felsted Model United Nations.  This opens on Sunday morning, with the theme focusing on LGBT rights, and diversity in society.

Felsted School has always been mindful of its role in public service and has a long history of pupils and staff supporting charitable causes and our local and wider community with both financial help and practical assistance.

The U19 girls were victorious last night in a nail biting semi-final match at home v Reeds School. Two very strong teams went head to head in a superb game of hockey, with some amazing attack moves and cracking saves by both sides. With Reed's leading 2:1 until the final 5 mins, our Felsted girls kept their belief and confirmed the saying that you should never give up! An equaliser was followed almost immediately by a third goal which now takes them into the National Final at the Lee Valley Olympic Park on Thursday 16th March.

Thank you to all the Felsted community for their support last night and we hope as many of you will come to the Nationals as possible!

We wish the U15 girls much luck in their semi-final match tomorrow Friday 3rd March, away v Wakefield.

Felsted School drama student, Ethan Monks has been accepted into the National Youth Music Theatre of Great Britain. Ethan, who wants to pursue a career in acting after his A Levels, was initially selected for the National Youth Theatre (NYT) in 2015 from over 5000 applicants. To then be accepted into the highly selective musical sector of one of the most competitive theatre institutions in the world is a great first step in his career.

The NYT gives talented young actors the chance to attend casting auditions for major productions in film, theatre and TV. Ethan completed a two week intensive acting summer course and performed in a 100 year anniversary play about World War I, which was watched by various theatre directors. NYT alumni include Eddie Redmayne, Helen Mirren, Daniel Day Lewis and Daniel Craig.

The National Youth Music Theatre provides exceptional opportunities in musical theatre through workshops, master classes and the chances to work with industry professionals.

After his A Levels, Ethan will have the opportunity to audition for professional West End shows, alongside his university studies. Ethan has already taken starring roles in Felsted theatre productions, including his portrayal of Pontius Pilate in last year's Jesus Christ Superstar!

Being accepted into such a prestigious institution was the first time I allowed myself to think of the prospect of acting as a career. I think acting develops people’s emotional awareness and I would encourage all young people to try it.

Ethan Monks.

All A*s for Felsted’s Elite Mathematicians

Felsted School’s most talented Year 11 Mathematicians, who were put forward for their Maths IGCSE exam early in January, have been rewarded for their efforts. All 13 top set students gained a clear A* grade, with Leo Wang, a full boarding pupil from China, scoring full marks on the second paper. Another two students, Matthew Hudson-Lund and Silas Turner Jones, both contemporary boarders, scored 99% on the first paper.

This is a huge achievement for the class, who took the exam five months earlier than their peers. They will now go on to take the demanding Additional Maths qualification in the summer.

Maths at Felsted is thriving with 98% of the cohort last summer achieving an A*- C grade and some 90 students studying it in the Sixth Form, either at A Level or as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

The results were excellent again this year and we’re thrilled for all the students who have worked very hard to achieve their A*. The vast majority of the class will go on to study Maths here in the Sixth Form and we look forward to seeing them continue to develop as Mathematicians over the next few years.

Mr Michael Campbell, Head of Maths at Felsted.

Every year, a generous ‘Wallis Scholarship’ is awarded to a Sixth Form pupil (current or new) excelling in Maths, in recognition of former Felstedian, John Wallis (1616–1703), most famous for introducing the symbol for infinity.

Applications are now open for 2018 entry

It’s a triple triumph for Felsted School as three girls’ sports teams secure their places in the National Netball and Hockey Finals.

The U19 girls’ Hockey team are through to the SMILE Independent Schools Hockey Cup National Final after a nail-biting Semi-Final match at home against a strong Reed’s side last Wednesday.  With Reed’s leading 2:1 until the final five minutes, an incredible belief and spirit saw the Felsted girls initially equal the score, before an incredible third and final goal won them the match just minutes before the whistle blew. They will play the National Final at Lee Valley Olympic Park on Thursday 16th March against Millfield School.

I am immensely proud of the girls. They never gave up and showed fantastic character to turn the game around in the way that they did. I am particularly pleased for the U6 members of the squad, who will now play their final hockey game for Felsted at the Olympic Park. A special way to end their Felsted hockey careers.

Ms Loren Sherer, Director of Girls’ Hockey.

Meanwhile, Felsted’s U12 and U13 Netball teams are through to the IAPS National Final after their success in the East Regional Tournament, hosted at Felsted School last week. The U13s won all nine of their games to be crowned the tournament winners, whilst the U12s won six of their eight games, finishing as runners-up. Both teams now proceed to the IAPS Netball National Finals this Friday 10th March at Basildon Sports Centre.

I am extremely proud of both the U12 and the U13 girls’ performances in tough and cold conditions. It’s incredible to have two teams in the National Finals and we are looking forward to rising to challenge.

Ms Libby Knifton,
Head of Girls' Sport, Felsted Preparatory School.

Felsted School currently holds a partnership with Super League Club, Mavericks Netball, who support the School’s netball programme and provide a strong pathway for talented players. Felsted's Senior Tennis team finished third in the National Final in March 2017! Both mixed double pairs proved that they have the talent to compete and win at a National level and were undoubtedly the best supported team in the competition.

This was Felsted’s second year in a row in the finals and coming third is a huge achievement, especially considering there were 350 schools at the start of the tournament.

Felsted Hosts Model United Nations Conference

Felsted School hosted its eighth Model United Nations (MUN) Conference with 19 schools from across the region attending. Pupils represented different countries, voicing the opinions of that country in order to bring about positive change. The delegates came together to discuss and debate the ever present issues of LGBT rights and how as a society we can be more tolerant and accepting.

Those in attendance were privileged to hear from Tess Brookes of the LGBT awareness charity Outhouse East, who gave everyone an insight into the daily plight of those identifying under the status of LGBT.  On the second day the committees were gifted with an enthusiastic talk from Dr Ellie Barnes MBE who works with the Educate and Celebrate LGBT awareness charity. Dr Barnes encouraged the pupils to reflect on how they could create a completely equal environment for all children regardless of gender or sexual orientation and drew attention to the possibility of gender neutral school uniform and toilets.

With the under thought of tolerance and acceptance vivid in the minds of delegates, they debated various other topics across the two days, including nuclear disarmament, the issue of new settlements in the South China Sea and religious extremism in the Middle East.

I thoroughly enjoyed representing Bolivia in the Security Council and hearing from the two impassioned guest speakers. It was a great learning experience and I would like to congratulate everyone at Felsted who helped make this 8th MUN conference run as smoothly as possible.

Felsted School Year 11 pupil, Peter Hipkin.
