Felsted School Hosts Seventh Model United Nations

Felsted hosted its 7th MUN conference with 15 schools representing different countries and voicing the opinions of that country in order to bring about positive change.
Just under 200 delegates came together to discuss and debate the ever present issues of migrants and refugees. Those in attendance were privileged to hear from James Simmonds-Read of The Children’s Society, who has worked with refugees since he began volunteering at university. James was joined by Souleymane, an asylum seeker from Guinea. Souleymane gave a first-hand account of what it was like to live as an asylum seeker in the UK, including his time spent in a detention centre.

The final day’s resolution turned the crisis on its head by imagining a scenario whereby Western Europeans were forced to flee their countries as warfare erupted in Southern Germany. The exercise reminded the delegates that those seeking refugee status were individuals with families, careers and homes.

Felsted School’s Ben Waring has been named the Wisden Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year, an honour based on his outstanding performance in school cricket. He received his award at Lords’s Cricket Ground last night from England Cricketer Jonny Bairstow.

Ben won Cricket World's Performance of the Week in July 2015 after breaking the Felsted School record, once held by Old Felstedian and former England Cricketer, Derek Pringle, taking 68 wickets at an average of 7.78, last season.

Ben not only plays for Felsted School 1st XI, and Saffron Walden CC 1st XI in the East Anglia Premier League, but also holds a contract with the Essex Cricket Academy where he attends training camps. He has recently toured Dubai with Essex and Australia with Felsted, but his most memorable current highlight has been the opportunity to bowl against Alastair Cook during Essex training, but he has yet to get him out!

Talking about this achievement, Ben, a weekly boarder at Felsted, comments“When I heard the news I was shocked and delighted. After all the hard work that has gone into the last few years, I am incredibly proud to receive this honour.”

Felsted’s Director of Cricket, former England cricketer Jason Gallian, is delighted that Ben has received this accolade;“the future looks very bright for Ben if you look at what previous winners have gone on to achieve.” Previous winners include current England stars Joss Buttler and Jonny Bairstow, as well as James Taylor, who has sadly had to retire after discovering that he had a congenital heart condition.

Felsted’s Headmaster, Mr Chris Townsend, who won three Blues for cricket while at Oxford University, is delighted that Felsted is continuing to foster young cricketing talent.“Felsted provides an outstanding environment for sportsmen and women to develop their potential alongside their studies.”

It is an incredible testament to the School and to Jason Gallian that a Felsted pupil has not only won this award, but that Reece Hussain, another Felsted pupil and nephew of former England Captain Nasser Hussain, was nominated as Runner-Up. Reece, who left Felsted last summer, scored over 1,000 runs in his last schoolboy season, including only the third double century in Felsted’s history. Even England opener Nick Knight did not manage that!

Felsted has a formidable reputation for cricket both locally, regionally and nationally. Pupils begin to play cricket from Year 3 (age 8) and it is the main sport for boys in the Summer Term in both the Senior and the Preparatory School. Several Old Felstedians have gone on to become professionals for the County and England teams, including Derek Pringle, John Stephenson, Nick Knight and Tim Phillips. Cricket for girls became a main sports option in 2014, with two teams competing at local and regional level.  The Felsted Girls' U15 Team recently won the U15 Lady Taverner’s Essex Cup 2016 and are through to the Regional Finals, under the expert tuition of Carla Rudd, professional county cricketer (Sussex) and Felsted girls’ cricket coach.

Felsted School has been declared one of the Top 100 schools for Cricket by The Cricketer Magazine 2015 and is currently nominated as an Inspirational School for girls’ cricket by Essex CCC.  Felsted became a MCCF (Marylebone Cricket Club Foundation) hub for girls’ cricket in November 2015, and is the main school partner of Essex Cricket, with many boys and girls playing at county level.

Felsted's Emma Jones, is the latest winner of the national Heffer’s Writing Competition after submitting her creative writing piece entitled ‘Helplessness’.

Emma is the second talented Felsted pupil to take this title, after her fellow classmate Henry Dean won with his creative writing homework earlier this year! The competition theme was ‘Temples, Tombs and Treasure’, and not only did Emma win the first prize, but fellow Yr 9, Hannah Cowie was runner up. Judged by experienced booksellers, the girls’ work will now be published in the Heffers’ newsletter, viewed by over fifteen thousand readers.

The English Department, which gained 90% A*-Bs at GCSE last summer, is keen to motivate the pupils into creative writing and have been encouraging them to enter each competition as homework tasks.

The girls’ English Teacher Mr Joe Johnson commented,“The whole class are proud of Emma's and Hannah's success, especially on the back of  the last competition. It shows how well the students have taken to creative writing and how they are inspiring each other.”

Felsted School had the privilege of welcoming Mr Michael Sharp, CEO of Debenhams as the guest speaker for the
2016 Cromwell Lecture.

Mr Sharp reflected on the qualities that led him from an eighteen year old management trainee, to being the CEO of an international,
multi-channel company with over 240 stores across 27 countries.

Mr Sharp answered challenging questions from the audience that focussed on the future of retailing and high street stores. There were fascinating insights into how consumers are behaving in this high-tech world and the customer profiling that companies use to target their markets.

The event, hosted by Felsted Library, brought together Felsted Sixth Form students, staff, parents and the local community.

Felsted Librarian, Mrs Nichola Martin commented “It was an inspirational talk that provided plenty for the audience to contemplate, focusing on family, dedication and hard work, embracing change and the qualities to be found in leaders.”

The next event, to be held on 27th September, will be The Butler Lecture, given by Old Felstedians Angus and Bella Collins, who recently completed record-breaking rows of the Atlantic.

Felsted Rugby Named Team of The Season

Felsted School’s Rugby Team have been voted ‘Team of The Season’ by ‘Fifteen Rugby’, after a very successful rugby season.
It is testament to the hard work put in by all the players and coaches that Felsted achieved over 200 votes more than any other school team nominated.

As well as playing for Felsted, many of the boys play at club, county and national levels. One individual completing a particularly memorably season is U6th pupil Ehren Painter, who was selected for the England U18s squad earlier this year. He has featured in matches against France, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and will now join the England U18 summer tour to South Africa. This has been an incredible experience for Ehren and will prepare him for his first full season as a Professional Academy Player at Northampton Saints.

Felsted currently holds a partnership with Saracens Rugby Club, which allows pupils to benefit from specialist coaching and expertise, and offers a clear pathway for talented players to join their academies. Rugby at Felsted is going from strength to strength, as shown by the success of former pupils, Rory Hutchinson and Max Malins, who are currently playing for Scotland and England U20s respectively.

Felsted School is delighted to announce the appointment of two former pupils into senior management positions. Loren Sherer is to be Director of Girls’ Sport at Felsted School and Hector Bevitt-Smith the Director of Sports and Activities at Felsted Preparatory School.
Currently Director of Hockey and Assistant Housemistress at Felsted, Loren has impressive sporting and academic credentials. Whilst studying for a degree in Zoology at Durham University, Loren played England U21 hockey, was part of the University National Champions team, gained life membership to Team Durham and was awarded a Durham University Full Palatinate. Gaining a full athletics scholarship to the University of Connecticut, she studied for a Master’s degree in Animal Sciences, receiving numerous USA collegiate hockey accolades in the process. Loren, who left Felsted in 2006, is really excited to be taking up this more prominent sporting role at Felsted;

“I am keen to enable all Felsted girls to discover the joy of sport, through the provision of as many teams and competitive fixtures as possible, and for them to want to continue to participate after leaving school. I am extremely excited by the huge boost in the media coverage of both girls’ netball and cricket and how this is transposing itself in the development of our girls here at Felsted. Along with tennis and hockey, Felsted girls really do have the ideal environment to explore their sporting potential, and I will be working closely with our sports scholars to develop them as athletes and performers.

I am really fortunate to be working alongside Lucy Barrett, Lindsay Keable (England Netball), Carla Rudd (Sussex and Super League Cricket) and Roslyn Cox (former professional Tennis), who have all competed at a top level and have an abundance of knowledge to pass on to the girls.”

Hector Bevitt-Smith, who also left Felsted as a student in 2006, went on to study Sports Coaching and Physical Education at Anglia Ruskin and Southampton Universities, with a period spent in Australia playing national league hockey and A grade cricket. After a year as a graduate teacher at Felsted, he subsequently taught at King Edward VI School in Stratford-upon-Avon for four years where he was Assistant Head of the Lower School and PSHE Co-ordinator. Hector has played BUCS rugby and East Premier division hockey for Bishop’s Stortford and hopes to become a full member of the MCC in years to come.

“I am delighted to return to Felsted to continue my career. My aim is to offer an unmatched co-curriculum and to help drive the school’s enviable reputation on the sports field.”

Felsted actively supports former students in their career aspirations, not only through offering work experience in teaching and areas such as accounts and marketing, but also through the Felsted Network, a thriving Linked In database of parents and former pupils who encourage career networking. Indeed, Felsted currently employs six former pupils across a range of professions.

Headmaster Chris Townsend comments; “Felsted is a very special community and it gives me great delight that former pupils are competing for and gaining these top positions. They have both impressed me greatly with their knowledge and desire to make a difference to our next generation of Felstedians. I look forward to working with them over the coming years.”

Felsted Awarded Special Merit Rolls-Royce Science Prize

Felsted School has been selected as a ‘Special Merit Award Winner' by the Rolls-Royce Science initiative in recognition of the quality of ideas and action plans to develop local partnerships through Science.

This award will enable Felsted to run some unique residential workshops to engage underprivileged pupils in Science, working with them to gain CREST Awards (Creativity in Engineering Science and Technology), a British Science Association Initiative. The initial idea followed research involving 2.4 million pupils, which looked at the positive impact of CREST awards on GCSE results and A-Level uptake in Science among pupils from low income families. This paper was presented at the House of Lords in January, where a key recommendation was to conduct more long term research analysing the effect of CREST on pupils from deprived areas.

Felsted has committed to running these workshops for a selected group of Year 7 pupils from  their partner school, The Royal Docks School in East London. They will attend a 3 day residential course at Felsted, returning every year until they take their GCSEs. During this time the pupils will undertake a series of CREST based award projects with guidance from staff at Felsted School, Royal Docks School, Essex University and pupil mentors. Scientists from Cambridge University are also willing to be involved in this project.

To further engage the local community, a Science Fair will held on the final day of each course for local schools to celebrate the pupils’ work and for them to engage in CREST inspired science activities. All pupils who successfully complete their BA CREST projects will be able to present them at the regional ‘Big Bang Science & Engineering competition. Felsted’s own pupils have had much success at this, going on to win prizes at The National Big Bang Fair.
Felsted Headmaster, Chris Townsend, comments;
“This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop a real passion for science, and follow in the footsteps of famous Felstedian scientists, such as Professor Tony Hunter and Professor Anthony Gallione, both of whom have been elected as Members of the Royal Society. The fact that we can also raise aspirations in our partner school in Newham, makes this project particularly worthwhile and exciting for all those involved.”

Felsted School’s Science Teacher and Director of Learning, Mrs Christina Bury comments;
“I am fortunate to be in a position to work with these children. I have supported pupils in completing the BA CREST Awards for the past ten years, during which time Felsted pupils have won many regional and national awards for their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) work. We are in a position to share our facilities here at Felsted and truly believe in the transformative effect this could have on pupil learning”.
Christina is a Specialist Leader in Education for Science, and leads network of primary school teachers in the Chelmsford area, aiming to inspire and raise standards. Christina is committed to Science outreach programmes for pupils across the county, as well as delivering the Science curriculum at Felsted's 'International Residential Summer School'.  With the Department for Education and the British Science Association keen to hear the findings from the proposed Rolls Royce project, she is confident the results will have wide reaching impact.

Felsted Business Students Increase Profits at Barnardo’s Braintree

A team of Business and Economics students from Felsted School had the unique opportunity of running the Barnardo’s charity shop in Braintree as part of the Store Wars national final.

In association with the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) Golden Jubilee celebration, the idea was to take over the store for one day and try to increase profits by as much as possible.

Using their business skills and some well-placed graphics kindly donated by Imaginators Ltd, the young entrepreneurs successfully attracted customers into the store with innovative ideas, such as complimentary tea and strawberries, a personal shopping service and a raffle with some top prizes that included a signed Essex Cricket bat.

The students had an early start on Saturday, but despite the weather their efforts were rewarded with customers flowing in at a steady stream. Overall, including donations on their Just Giving Page, they raised over £1300 for the charity and quadrupled the average store takings for the day.

Head of Business Studies at Felsted School, Mrs Joy McArdle commented; “It was lovely to see staff, parents and members of the BSA supporting the students in their endeavours to win the challenge.

The students conducted themselves very professionally and I was proud to see them making a difference for children less fortunate.”

Summer Celebration Concert

The summer term is never an easy one to get a concert into as rehearsal time is so limited due to external exams. The decision to move the Summer Celebration Concert to the last week of term proved to be a huge success. The LRH was packed with students and visitors in anticipation of performances from the orchestra, jazz band and the school choirs. It was great to have so many Year Eleven pupils come back for the event and to see some who had traveled from as far afield as Germany.
The Steel Band provided the entertainment in the marquee whilst guests assembled and had a pre-concert drink, helping to getting everyone into a summer mood, despite the grey clouds and the drizzle. For many, this was the first orchestral concert that they had attended and they were blown away by the sound of the orchestra as they played music from the Empire Strikes Back. Bella Westlake (flute) and Rahel Gerrens (cello) were the soloists of the evening and they held the audience captive with performances of Rutter's Suite Antique and Tchaikovsky's Nocturne for Cello; you could have heard a pin drop in the rests.

For many, the highlight of the evening was the performance by the newly formed "Diamond DofE Staff Choir". Their rendition of New York, New York! was excellent (and memorable for all the right reasons). This performance alone raised over £200 for the DofE. Further donations can be made online.

I would like to thank all of my wonderful colleagues for putting on such a great event, but most of all, a huge thank you to the performers and the audience for making the Summer Celebration such a huge success.

Felsted’s 1st XI Cricket Boys Finish Second in the Country

Felsted School’s 1st XI Cricket Team finished second in the country after a fantastic run in the National T20 competition
this season.

After strong performances in the earlier rounds against St Joseph’s, Oakham, Bedford and Shrewsbury, the boys progressed to the T20 Finals day at Arundel Castle Ground.
In the semi-finals, Felsted faced Sedbergh and bowled them out for 133 runs inside 19 overs. The boys chased down this total with seven wickets to spare and faced a strong Millfield side in the Final. Millfield’s impressive total of 224 proved to be just out of Felsted’s reach on the day, but this placed them a highly impressive second out of 132 teams across the country.

Director of Felsted Cricket and former England and County Cricketer, Jason Gallian comments; “I was very proud of the team this year. They played well together and worked hard to gain this success. It was a great experience for the boys to play at Arundel Castle in Sussex and to get to the final was a super achievement.”

Headmaster Chris Townsend adds: “Felsted has a proud tradition of success in all sports, and in particular in cricket, with former pupils such as Nick Knight, John Stephenson and Derek Pringle. This team’s achievements match up to any of their illustrious predecessors, and even out-performed the Girls’ Cricket team, who earlier this year finished third in the country in the Indoor National Finals, at Lord’s. It is a tribute to the hard work of all the coaches and players to have reached this level.”

100% International Baccalaureate Pass Rate for Felsted

Felsted is delighted to announce outstanding IB results once again this year. In 2016 Felsted had its largest ever cohort taking the IB (37 students), and we are proud to report that all were successful in gaining the Diploma.

This was achieved with an average score of a fraction below 34 points. This score is better than an average score of ABB at A Level, and shows how well pupils have performed in these demanding examinations, based on an absolute world standard.

Felsted’s top scorer was Jakob Geusen from Germany, who achieved an impressive 40 points. A member of the Academic Society, Jakob is also a keen basketball, football and tennis player, who hopes to study Engineering at University after a gap year.

The IB is taken by nearly one third of the students at Felsted and a number have achieved world class scores, notably Faye Calow, who achieved the required score of 39 points to confirm her place at Trinity College, Oxford, to study English Language and Literature.

Faye, an Academic Scholar and Senior Prefect, joined Felsted as a day girl in 2011 and has fully immersed herself in all the opportunities the School has offered her. ”It is my dream to study at Oxford and I am so delighted to have been able to achieve it.”
(Faye Calow, Felsted Speech Day 2016)

Felsted’s top performers not only excelled academically, but also contributed to the strong co-curricular programme offered at the School. Rahel Gerrens, from Germany, who brought huge talent and commitment to the musical life of the School and Sofia Ramadoro from Italy, a keen artist, both achieved an exceptional 38 points.

Adam Sheehan achieved enough to follow his brother, Dominic, to study in the United States. Whilst at Felsted, Adam has particularly enjoyed being involved in tennis and has recently completed his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Headmaster Chris Townsend comments:“It is fantastic to see such a range of students enjoying excellent IB results - and there is no doubt that study of the International Baccalaureate sets them up to be successful at University and beyond.  This is a tribute to the hard work of our students but also the significant hard work and commitment of our teaching staff in delivering the IB. It is also pleasing to see that a number of our most successful students have contributed widely to the School, through leadership roles, music, drama, service and sport.”

Felsted Jump into National Third

Felsted School’s Senior Riding Team achieved an incredible third place at the National Schools’ Championships after performing brilliantly over a very challenging course in the infamous Hickstead arena.

Sixth Formers Sam Wisbey, Jemima Upton and Molly McGuckian were competing against 57 other teams from schools across the UK.

After a strong start, the team held their nerve as they made it through to the final jump-off, where they finished with just four faults and a score of 12, placing them third in the UK.

Out of 174 riders competing, all three Felsted riders also finished in the individual top ten. Year 12, Sam Wisbey comments; “Jumping in the Hickstead arena was an incredible opportunity. We are very proud to have placed third out of so many schools.”

Felsted has had a number of successes at regional and national level in the past few years, including a significant number of individual and group qualifiers for the NSEA National Schools Showjumping Championships in October 2016.

This triumph for Felsted Riding is up there with the very best of the School’s sporting
achievements and the team should be incredibly proud.

Chris Townsend, Headmaster.

Felsted pupils gained an impressive overall set of A Level results, with 81% achieving A* to C grades and a 99% pass rate. More than 30% of all results were at A* or A grade, with many students confirming their places at the country's top universities.

Top Highlights

  • 85 students took A Levels at Felsted in 2016
  • 30% of all grades were A* or A
  • More than 4 out of 5 of all grades were C or better
  • The pass rate was higher than 99%
  • 37 students took the International Baccalaureate Diploma.  If IB results are included with the A Level grades, the A*-B percentage is 68% overall, with 88% of all grades A*-C or the equivalent
  • Many subjects achieved exceptional results - German, Latin, Further Maths and Theatre Studies all achieved 100% A*-B; while History, Chemistry, Maths, Psychology and Religious Studies also achieved over 75% A*-B.

Felsted’s top A Level achiever was Anthony Hickling, who secured two A*s and one A grade and is waiting for confirmation from Robinson College Cambridge,  to read Mathematics. As Felsted’s Wallis Maths Scholar, Anthony was named as the top Mathematician in Essex after his performance in the British Maths Olympiad last year. Anthony was also one of only 40 students across the UK last year to be invited to take part in a prestigious Maths Summer School based at Oxford.
(Anthony Hickling & Mr Chris Townsend, Headmaster)

Modern Language students achieved extremely well, bucking the national trend for a decline in a Modern Language results, with Pierre Davies, age 18 from Chesham in Buckinghamshire, gaining three A grades to read Modern Languages at Durham University. Pierre was a School Prefect and took advantage of many aspects of Felsted School life including public speaking, the Choir and sports. Tom Lane-Feldman, 18, who has been at Felsted School since the age of four, also gained three A grades to read Modern Languages at UCL. Tom, a weekly boarder from Braintree, pursued his talent for Drama and Music at Felsted, taking many lead roles, including the most recent production of ‘Jesus Christ, Superstar’. He was also captain of Badminton.

In addition to being a prefect, she also starred in School drama productions and won the School’s public speaking competition, the UpJohn Declamation. Georgia Willson also achieved her goal of studying Business Management at Birmingham University, having gained an A* in Business Studies, an A in Drama and Theatre Studies and a B in Economics. Georgia, a contemporary boarder from Great Sampford, took full advantage of her time at Felsted, starring in School productions and performing in the Senior Choir. She also succeeded in gaining a place on the Goldman Sachs Inspire Programme last year to pursue her passion for business.

In summary, Felsted’s other top achievers were: Will Bargate, Charlie Broom, Max Boyce, Izi Ditchburn, Harry Pilcher, Simon Holme, James Hoile, Max Griffin, Faye Ayodeji, Isla Cuthbert, Greg Flack, Sok Lew, Alexandra Malyon Davies, Oliver Salmon, Jamie Smart, Stefan Warner, Georgia Willson, Sophie Wise.

It is fantastic to see so many Felstedians rewarded for their efforts and the hard work of their teachers, with many going off to the best universities in this country and abroad. Including IB results with our A Level grades, the approximate A*-B percentage increases to 68% overall, which reflects the outstanding level of work done by this year group. AS results also showed real progress with as many as 34% of all subjects graded at A, and 59% graded A or B.

Felsted pupils have again recorded top results in their GCSE exams, following on from strong results in A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma earlier this summer.

Headmaster, Mr Chris Townsend, comments; “It is fantastic to see such strong results, with ten pupils achieving a clean sweep of A* and A grades, and nearly half of all GCSE exams being graded at A or A*.  Every single pupil passed both English Language and Literature, while Maths achieved 98% A*-C, to build on some stunning results from the accelerated group who took their GCSEs earlier in the year.  English, Latin, Maths, Design Technology, Music, RS, Theatre Studies and Greek all achieved more than 90% A*-B.  While some schools are under pressure to move away from the creative subjects, it is particularly good to see Music, Design Technology and Theatre Studies doing so well.  I am very grateful to the hard work of all the teaching staff at Felsted, the support of the parents, and most importantly the commitment of the pupils themselves in achieving these impressive results.”

Among the stand out performers were Will Barker, Samual Barratt, Tom Beale, Tom Blanc, Luke Bury, Ella-Rae Coleby, Scarlett Coote, Imogen Gander, Bethan Hudson-Lund, Alex Manson, Harry Raffan, Chiara Rocker-Cook, Jeremy Salmon and Bella Westlake.  Many others also outperformed their predictions.

Summary Highlights

  • 102 students took GCSEs this summer
  • 46% A* or A grades
  • 73% A* to B grades
  • 91% A* to C grades (national average of 69%)
  • 98% achieved five A* to C grades
  • 96% gained 5 A*-C including Maths and English
