Felsted School pupils have been awarded a Diana Award in recognition of their fundraising efforts. The Magic Bus Group 2014 received the award for being ‘Champion Fundraisers’, national recognition as a leading group of young people who have raised a significant amount of money for a charitable cause.
The target of £25,000 was reached and has enabled Magic Bus to start the construction of a ‘Felsted Leadership Centre’ at Karjat, some 75 kilometres from Mumbai. The Magic Bus Centre, spread over a 20 acre plot, allows children from Mumbai and the surrounding tribal villages to engage in sport and other activities in order to develop their personal and social needs.

Magic Bus was founded by Old Felstedian Matthew Spacie, MBE, to support deprived children living in the slums and on the streets of Mumbai. Felsted students visit each year for ten days during which time they not only teach children core life skills through delivering a unique sport and activity programme but also assist in rural village communities to improve school and local facilities. Fund raising activities over the past year have included a Bollywood Night with auction and raffle, the production of a calendar of Mumbai photographs taken by the students, running of half marathons, the selling of Felsted honey, an afternoon tea party with raffle, a sponsored cycle ride and the selling of chocolates and roses for Valentine’s Day.

Tessy Ojo CEO of the Diana Award said: “The Diana Award is proud to recognise young fundraisers, who have the confidence and courage to stand up for what they believe. The Diana Champion Fundraiser Award is presented to inspirational young people who have made a positive difference in the communities. With a growing network of over 44,000 Award Holders, we are building a force of young people who are committed to take social action and improve our communities.”

Rob Thomas, Head of Magic Bus Centre for Learning & Development comments, "We are very proud of our association with Felsted School, the students and staff in their support, not just financially, but in connecting people across cultures and backgrounds for mutual learning and development.”

Headmaster Dr Mike Walker comments, “Led by the Magic Bus Team 2014, and supported by the tireless work of Mrs Carolyn Phillips, Housemistress, all pupils have shown exceptional dedication in their wide-ranging fundraising efforts. They can be very proud of this recognition at the highest level, and we look forward to the Award Ceremony."
