Felsted Lower Sixth pupil Ed Lucas, has been placed in the top 15 of entrants in the Trinity College Cambridge University National Geography Essay Competition, an exceptional performance against a large number of entries. The competition, open to all Lower Sixth pupils across the UK, attempts to give students a platform to explore their interests and aims to encourage more geography degree applicants.

Pupils were challenged to reflect on the following question: ‘Most continental land masses have now been explored and satellite technology has allowed Earth’s surface to be surveyed with incredible precision. Given this, does anything significant remain to be mapped?’

Ed’s analysis covered topics such as landmines, oil reserves, water depletion and crime mapping.

Mrs Elizabeth Rose, Head of Geography, comments:“Ed has a genuine interest and curiosity about the world and simply relished the challenge of taking forward his ideas and reading around them. He is very self-motivated and spent much of his summer supporting his initial thoughts with the relevant academic literature.”

Ed says “I entered the competition to enhance my UCAS application and university options. Mrs Rose, my Geography teacher, helped me with thinking about some initial ideas to write about. My dream is to study Geography at Cambridge, so I am really happy to have done well”.

Mrs Rose is confident about Ed’s future “I look forward to learning about Ed’s progress with his Cambridge application. He deserves to succeed.”
