Felsted pupils went on a horizon broadening photography trip to Kenya this summer. Created to ensure a diverse range of experiences, the Year 9 students had the opportunity to improve their global and cultural awareness, whilst honing their burgeoning photography skills.

There was a thought provoking visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage, which cares for young orphaned elephants, the unfortunate result of poaching. This experience taught the students the importance of conservationism. The group then visited a Massai market, where they practised their bartering skills, and gained an appreciation of the contrast between the market and Western Shopping Centres.

The Basura Primary School visit proved entertaining and unnerving in equal members as the group were grabbed and compared to One Direction members! Both schools’ pupils warmly greeted their counterparts and exchanged details of their typical school day.

Felstedians also donated clothing and school equipment to the worthy Hanne Howard Foundation, who work with sick and underprivileged children in the Lenana slum, outside Nairobi.

The pupils were fortunate to go on many game drives; in Nakura they were extremely lucky to see and photograph the rare Black Rhino, Flamingos and Impala.

To cap off their trip, pupils went to a Kazuri bead factory, ‘Kazuri’ meaning something small and beautiful in Swahili. The students gained an insight into the Swahili culture and traditions, whilst observing the production and provenance of jewellery. Bethan Hudson-Lund, age 14 from Wickham Bishops, sums up the trip: ‘Overall, this extraordinary trip was one of the best experiences of my life. I know I will keep in touch with many of the people I met’.

The trip was led by Dr Charles Lee, Head of Drama & Theatre Studies and Photography at Felsted School, who comments ‘It was the inaugural photography trip for Felsted. As a Licentate of the Royal Photography Society I was delighted to share my experience with the pupils in such an awe-inspiring environment. I was so impressed with some of their pictures!’
