Felsted’s Year 11 students have met the challenge of more demanding exams this summer by achieving similar proportions of the higher grades as in previous years. This follows the A Level results last week, which saw Felsted students maintaining high standards despite falling results in the country.

Thirteen pupils achieved at least 8 A* and As, with particularly strong results from Isabella George, who achieved 8 A*s and 2 As, and Tor Holmes and Tom Lane-Feldman, who both gained 7 A*s and 3 As.

Harry Pilcher and Jamie Smart impressed with 10 A*s and As, with Faye Calow and Anthony Hickling achieving 9 A*s and As.  Tom and Faye even found time to gain a GCSE in Ancient Greek outside of lessons!

95 students sat GCSEs this summer, with the overall statistics as follows:

  • 13%  A* grades
  • 40%  A* to  A grades
  • 71%  A* to B grades
  • 87%  A* to C grades
  • 94%  five A*- C grades
  • 92%  five A*- C grades, including English and Maths
  • The following departments gained over 90% A* to B grades: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Language, English Literature, Latin, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education.

Isabella George is delighted with her results. She is going on to study A Levels in English, Philosophy, Classics and either Art or Theatre Studies. “My  dream is to study English at either Oxford or Cambridge University, so I will be following the Oxbridge programme at Felsted over the coming year.” Isabella takes full advantage of all that is on offer, balancing her studies with singing and performing on stage.

Tom Lane-Feldman is all set to pursue his dream of studying Modern Foreign Languages at university. He will be taking A Levels in French, Spanish, Latin and Music. Tom takes a very active role in Drama at Felsted, playing lead roles in all major school productions, supported by a wonderful singing voice. He also enjoys badminton and hockey.

Tor Holmes will be going on to study the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Felsted. “I am keen to keep my options open for further study at this stage.” Tor balances his academic life with a love of Art.

Faye Calow is another Felsted student who will be studying the IB Diploma next year, majoring in Chemistry, French, English and Latin.“My dream is to study Classics at Oxford. I attended an Open Day at Balliol College for young students interested in Classics, and I absolutely loved it.” Faye also enjoys the social side of school life, and likes to play hockey and tennis.

Anthony Hickling is another Felstedian with his sights set on an Oxbridge place. “I really want to study Maths at Cambridge, and will be taking Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A Level”. Anthony is one of only 40 students across the UK who was invited to take part in the prestigious Oxford University Maths Summer School this month. “I attended St. Anne’s College for one week to participate in the UK Mathematics Trust Summer School. They stretched our brains in many ways – I particularly liked the group challenges.” Anthony also plays the violin in the School Orchestra.

Jamie Smart achieved a fantastic set of results, bearing in mind he is not 16 until September.  He will be taking A Levels in Economics, Maths, Chemistry and Music. “I love Chemistry and really hope to study it at university.” Jamie balances his academic life with a love of music, playing the piano, clarinet and tenor saxophone.
